    Campground Rules

    Chewonki’s Big Eddy Campground is a wilderness campground. Our stewardship goal is to maintain the natural beauty of Big Eddy for a true wilderness experience. Chewonki promotes low-impact camping and a thorough respect for the natural world.

    • The campground is open early May through mid-October.
    • Check in 1 p.m. to 8:00 p.m, and until 9:00 p.m. on Saturday’s.
    • Check out time 11 a.m.
    • Quiet hours 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
    • Maximum trailer length is 30 feet. Please contact us by email for more information
    • Consumption of alcohol and tobacco is prohibited in public places.
    • No cutting of live trees or vegetation. Only dead and down wood may be collected from the forest floor.
    • Do not bring firewood from home. Maine State Law states that no firewood may be brought from more than 50 miles away to prevent the spreading of invasive insects.
    • Fires may not be left unattended.
    • Fly fishing only after August 15.
    • All vehicles must park in designated gravel areas only.
    • No burning of plastic or food garbage. Paper and cardboard are allowed.
    • Pets are welcome and must be kept on a leash at all times. Pets may not be left unattended in the campground. Please pick up after them.
    • All camping equipment and vehicles must be placed on bare soil only, not on vegetation. Re-vegetation is in progress throughout the campground to protect the river and the natural surroundings.
    • Firearms are permitted at Big Eddy after Sept. 30. They must be locked in a case and rendered incapable of use.
    • No discharging of firearms is allowed within the campground.
    • No fireworks permitted at the campground.
    • Bikes are not allowed on the Golden Road.
    • Returnables and recycling disposal provided.
    • There is no dumping station available at Big Eddy. Free dumping station can be found at the Katahdin Area Chamber of Commerce in Millinocket.
    • Big Eddy is a “Carry in/ Carry Out” campground. We also operate under a Zero Waste goal. Please minimize the waste you bring to the campground and plan to carry out what you carry in.
    • Please Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
    • There is no phone service at Big Eddy, however you may share our email address with those who might need to get a hold of you. bigeddy@chewonki.org
